This is how we approach feature walls too. We paint the feature colour, let it dry sufficiently, mask a clean edge and spray the remaining surfaces. This gives a neat line between the wall and ceiling. If you add a feature colour afterwards, you will need to tape the ceiling. Any unevenness in the ceiling line may then show in the edge of the feature colour.     <\/p>\n<p>If you want a feature colour, it makes sense to let us include it in the work. We usually apply it with a roller because the area is too small for spraying. For this finish (Dutch Class A), the plasterer applies a base coat, followed after drying by a finishing coat and light sanding. This closes the pores and makes the surface smooth enough for spraying.  <\/p>\n<p>Many plasterers assume the painter will sand the walls, and many painters have taken on this work. We believe sanding is part of providing a paint-ready plaster finish and is therefore the plasterer\u2019s responsibility.  <\/p>\n<p>That said, we do go over the walls with a hand sanding pad before starting to remove protruding plaster droplets. This is only light sanding and does not change the overall roughness of the walls. If you want smooth, beautifully finished walls, a wallpaper-ready surface may not yet give you the look you have in mind.  <\/p>\n<p>Your options are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Skim coating<br \/>A thin layer of plaster is applied to smooth the walls. Once sanded, the walls are ready for spray painting. <\/li>\n<li>Renovation lining paper (renovlies or renostuc)<br \/>Available in various types, this wallcovering provides a smooth finish and can bridge minor future cracks to some extent. It comes in smooth and textured versions and can be spray painted for an attractive finish.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Keep in mind that new buildings will move and settle. However much you want to avoid cracks, it is sensible to expect that some may appear. Renovation lining paper is more forgiving of minor cracks than plaster, although we personally prefer the smoother look of plaster.
