How to prepare your home for spray painting

A practical checklist for preparing for spray painting

This page explains how to prepare your home for spray painting, with a handy checklist to guide you.

Getting your home ready for spray painting involves a few preparations, but it is straightforward. To help you, we have put together a practical checklist. We also provide this information when you request a quote, so you know what to expect.

Wall spray painting

Empty the rooms that will be sprayed

All rooms to be spray painted must be completely empty. Remove furniture, cupboards, light fittings and other items, and store them elsewhere.

Spray painting often takes place after new plastering or in a new-build home, when the property is still empty. If you want your home sprayed while you are already living there, allow enough preparation time to empty the rooms completely.

Remove the covers from switches and sockets

The covers from sockets and switches can be removed beforehand. The fitting itself, including the metal mounting plate, can stay in place and will be masked by us. After spraying, the covers can be refitted to sit neatly against the painted surface.

Remove the stair handrail

If the wall alongside your stairs will also be sprayed, the handrail can be removed beforehand. The brackets can remain in place and will be masked by us. Removing the handrail lets us spray the wall in one continuous pass for a better finish.

Remove curtain tracks

Curtain tracks can also be temporarily removed. Taking them down before spraying allows us to paint the whole ceiling evenly. Once the old or new tracks are fitted, they will sit neatly against the fresh paintwork.

Clean your home and remove dust

All surfaces that should not be painted must be masked. Please make sure frames, kitchens, doors, windows, floors and other surfaces are as clean, grease-free and dust-free as possible. This helps us apply the masking securely.

Make sure walls and ceilings are ready to spray

To help the work run smoothly, walls and ceilings must be ready for spraying. New plasterwork should be finished to a paint-ready standard by the plasterer, free from imperfections and given sufficient drying time. There should be no dark, damp patches remaining.

When spraying over existing paintwork, we assume the surface is ready to be painted in its current condition.

Electricity, water and toilet facilities

Our equipment requires electricity and running water. A toilet must also be available for our team.

Practical information

We like to start early to avoid traffic and begin work on time. Our painters arrive at your property at 7:00 am. Before starting, we walk through everything together: the condition of the plasterwork, the finish you can expect, where each colour should go and any other practical details. We then get to work and aim to complete the job within the agreed schedule.
